December 4, 1944 a British Typhoon of 164th Squadron RAF crashed at  "de Plaat" (water-meadows in Dreumel).......


Twelve  “Typhoon” fighter bombers attacked German 88 mm Flak south west of Tiel. (near the villages of Est and Opijnen.

 
The fighter bombers were part of  164th Squadron of Second Tactical Airforce RAF.

Pilot Flight Lieutenant N.L. Merrett, who flew  Typhoon MN237, “O” for Oscar, was shot down. He managed to bail out by parachute and ended up in the water-meadows along the river Waal at Dreumel.

The crashed at the allied side of the river Waal on a part of the water-meadows that is called "De Plaat".

Flight Lieutenant Merret was back in bussiness very soon because december 11th 1944 he was involved in an attack on a train near Utrecht.

This time he was not that fortunate, because being shot again he was made POW and died of wounds December 23, 1944.

Merret, 24 years old, was buried at the Algemene Begraafplaats "Soestbergen" at Utrecht.
