"The next morning, June 23rd, a German troop van arrived to escort me as a Prisoner of War to Amsterdam. In Amsterdam I was interrogated by a German Officer who spoke fluently in English. After giving him my name, rank and number as was required, he left. At this time I had had no contact with any other of my crew members, and did not until arriving at Stalag Luft III Centre compound P.O.W. camp later.

The following day, the interrogation officer returned and proceeded to tell me about myself, my squadron, and many of the other squadron officers. He eventually showed me the authentic English R.A.F. Flight magazine in which my Distinguished Flying Cross had been gazetted in May 1943 following completion of my first operational tour. Obviously this publication had easily arrived via either Switzerland, Spain or Portugal, which were neutral countries bordering German occupied territory.

My next stop via train was to Frankfurt. On arrival at Frankfurt, the German troops guarding us had to prevent a large crowd of civilians from attacking us, as the train station and surrounding buildings had been badly damaged in an air raid by R.A.F. bombers some two weeks previously. After that I was transported to Dulag Luft at Oberursel for further interrogation and solitary confinement before proceeding to Stalag Luft III Prisoner of War Camp".
